Jatamansi (Nardostachys jatamansi), the spikenard of the ancient world, is a small perennial of the honeysuckle family, Caprifoliaceae, native to alpine meadows of the Himalaya from Nepal to Yunnan at 3,000-5,000 m. It grows 10-60 cm tall with a tuft of narrow, lance-shaped leaves and small, dense heads of pale pink flowers. The dark rhizome is covered in a shaggy mat of brown fibers from old leaf bases and has a heavy, earthy, musky scent; wild stocks are listed under CITES Appendix II. We extract the dried rhizome.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
