Kola (Cola nitida), the kola nut tree, is an evergreen tree of the mallow family, Malvaceae, native to the rainforests of West Africa from Sierra Leone to Ghana and grown in Nigeria and across the tropics. It reaches 12-20 m with glossy, leathery, oblong leaves and clusters of small, cream flowers streaked with purple. Star-shaped clusters of woody pods hold 5-10 large seeds, white, pink or red, which are bitter and caffeine-rich and were an original flavor of cola drinks. We extract the dried nut.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
