Lu Gen (Phragmites australis, long known as Phragmites communis), the common reed, is a giant perennial grass of the grass family, Poaceae, found in marshes, ditches and lake margins on every continent except Antarctica. Its hollow, jointed canes rise 2-4 m from a dense network of creeping rhizomes, with long, flat, grey-green leaves and feathery purple-brown plumes in late summer that fade to silver. The fresh rhizome is pale yellow and sweet, with a mild, cool taste. We extract the dried root and the dried stem separately.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
