Lu Lu Tong (Liquidambar formosana), the Chinese sweetgum or Formosan gum, is a large deciduous tree of the sweetgum family, Altingiaceae, native to China, Taiwan, Laos and Vietnam. It grows 20-40 m with three-lobed, maple-like leaves that turn red in autumn and a fragrant, resinous sap. The fruit is a woody, spiky ball 2-4 cm across made of many fused capsules, each opening by a small hole, which gives the Chinese name meaning "all roads open". The dried balls are grey-brown and light. We extract the dried fruit.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
