Magnolia (Magnolia virginiana), the sweetbay magnolia, is a slender evergreen or semi-evergreen tree of the magnolia family, Magnoliaceae, native to the swamps and coastal plain of the eastern United States from Massachusetts to Texas. It grows 10-20 m with smooth grey bark and glossy, oblong leaves that are silvery-white beneath and flash in the wind. The creamy-white, cup-shaped flowers open a few at a time through summer and smell strongly of lemon and vanilla; the bark is aromatic and slightly bitter. We extract the dried bark.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
