Maqui (Aristotelia chilensis) is a small evergreen tree or shrub of the Elaeocarpaceae family, native to the temperate rainforests of central and southern Chile and adjacent Argentina, where it grows wild in clearings and along streams. It reaches 4-5 m with reddish young stems, glossy, oval, finely toothed leaves and small greenish-white flowers on separate male and female plants. The pea-sized berries ripen glossy purple-black with a sweet, slightly tart taste and a juice that stains deeply, long picked by the Mapuche. We extract the dried berry.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
