Maral Root (Rhaponticum carthamoides, also known as Leuzea carthamoides) is a robust perennial of the daisy family, Asteraceae, native to the alpine meadows of the Altai and Sayan mountains of southern Siberia, Kazakhstan and Mongolia. It grows 50-150 cm tall with large, deeply lobed, thistle-like leaves and a single globe-shaped purple-violet flower head up to 8 cm across. The thick, woody, dark brown rhizome has a distinctive resinous smell, and the name recalls the maral deer that dig for it in spring. We extract the dried root.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
