Myrtle (Myrtus communis), the common or true myrtle, is a dense evergreen shrub of the myrtle family, Myrtaceae, native to the Mediterranean, North Africa and western Asia and a classic plant of Greek and Roman gardens. It grows 2-5 m tall with small, glossy, pointed leaves dotted with translucent oil glands and, in summer, solitary white, fragrant flowers with a prominent brush of golden stamens, followed by blue-black berries. The crushed leaves have a clean, spicy, eucalyptus-like scent, and the berries flavor Sardinian mirto liqueur. We extract the dried leaf.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
