Nirgundi (Vitex negundo), the Chinese chaste tree or five-leaved chaste tree, is a large deciduous shrub of the mint family, Lamiaceae, native to South and East Asia from India and Sri Lanka to China, the Philippines and Indonesia. It grows 3-5 m with square, grey-downy stems, palmate leaves of three to five lance-shaped leaflets that are pale and felted beneath, and long, upright panicles of small lavender-blue flowers. The leaves are strongly aromatic with a camphor-like, slightly bitter taste. We extract the dried leaf.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
