Niu Xi (Huai) (Achyranthes bidentata), the ox-knee or two-toothed chaff flower, is a perennial of the amaranth family, Amaranthaceae, native to China, Japan, Korea, India and Southeast Asia; the Huai name marks root grown in the old Huaiqing prefecture of Henan, the most prized source. It grows 70-120 cm tall with square stems swollen at the joints like an ox's knee, opposite oval leaves and slender spikes of small greenish flowers that bend back against the stem. The long, slender root is yellowish-brown, flexible and faintly sweet. We extract the dried root.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
