Oregon Grape (Mahonia aquifolium, treated by POWO as Berberis aquifolium) is an evergreen shrub of the barberry family, Berberidaceae, native to the Pacific Northwest from British Columbia to northern California and the state flower of Oregon. It grows 1-3 m tall with stiff, pinnate leaves of glossy, spiny, holly-like leaflets that turn bronze and red in winter, dense clusters of bright yellow flowers in spring and powdery blue-black berries that are sour and seedy. The roots and inner bark are bright yellow from berberine and intensely bitter. We extract the dried root.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
