Orris (Iris germanica) is the bearded iris, a rhizomatous perennial of the iris family, Iridaceae, native to the Mediterranean and long cultivated across Europe, notably around Florence. It forms fans of grey-green sword-shaped leaves and bears large purple-and-white flowers with a fuzzy "beard" on the falls. The thick rhizome, pale and knobby, is dug, peeled and aged for years, during which it develops the violet-like scent prized in perfumery. We extract the dried root.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
