Picrorhiza (Picrorhiza kurroa) is a small perennial of the plantain family, Plantaginaceae, native to the alpine Himalaya from Kashmir to Sikkim at 3,000 to 5,000 meters, where it grows on rocky slopes and moist ledges. It forms low rosettes of spoon-shaped, serrated leaves 5 to 10 cm long and sends up short spikes of small pale blue to purple flowers. The rhizome is slender, woody and ringed with leaf scars, and intensely bitter, which is the meaning of the Sanskrit name kutki. We extract the dried rhizome.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
