Propolis is not a plant but a resinous material made by honey bees (Apis mellifera, family Apidae), which collect sticky exudates from the buds and bark of poplar, birch, conifers and other trees and blend them with beeswax and their own secretions. Bees apply it to seal cracks, smooth surfaces and coat the interior of the hive. It is brown to greenish and sticky at hive temperature, brittle when cold, with a sharp balsamic, resinous scent, and its composition varies with the local trees. We extract the dried bee product.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
