About Plantago ovata

Psyllium (Plantago ovata) is the blond or Indian psyllium, a low annual of the plantain family, Plantaginaceae, native from the Mediterranean to northwestern India and cultivated on a large scale in Gujarat and Rajasthan. It grows 10 to 40 cm tall with a rosette of narrow, linear, slightly hairy leaves and many short stalks ending in dense oval spikes of tiny white flowers. Each capsule splits to release two boat-shaped, pale pink-brown seeds whose outer husk swells into a clear mucilage in water. We extract the dried seed.

Tincture or alcohol-free drops?

Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
