Purslane (Portulaca oleracea) is a low, succulent annual of the purslane family, Portulacaceae, probably native to the Old World but now found as a weed of gardens and sidewalks on every continent and eaten as a vegetable from the Mediterranean to Mexico. Its smooth, reddish, fleshy stems sprawl in mats to 40 cm across, bearing thick, paddle-shaped leaves clustered toward the tips. Small yellow flowers with five petals open only on sunny mornings, and the tiny black seeds spill from lidded capsules. The leaves taste tart and slightly salty. We extract the dried aerial parts.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
