Pyrrosia (Pyrrosia lingua) is the tongue fern, an evergreen fern of the polypody family, Polypodiaceae, native to China, Japan, Korea and Indochina, where it grows on shaded rocks and tree trunks. A slender creeping rhizome covered in brown scales produces simple, undivided, tongue-shaped fronds 10 to 30 cm long on wiry stalks. The upper surface is dark green and leathery, while the underside is densely covered in pale, star-shaped hairs and, in season, rust-brown spore clusters. In China the fronds are called shi wei, "stone reed". We extract the dried leaf.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
