Qin Jiao (Gentiana macrophylla; pharmacopoeial name Radix Gentianae Macrophyllae) is a large-leaved gentian, a perennial of the gentian family, Gentianaceae, native to northern and western China, Mongolia and Siberia, where it grows in alpine meadows and open forest. It forms a basal cluster of long, lanceolate, strongly veined leaves, with shorter stems bearing dense whorls of tubular blue-purple flowers near the top. The root is long, twisted and yellowish-brown, often with several strands braided together. We extract the dried root.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
