About Lens culinaris

Red Lentil (Lens culinaris) is an annual of the legume family, Fabaceae, domesticated in the Near East about 9,000 years ago and now grown from India and Turkey to the Canadian prairies. It is a slender, bushy plant 20 to 50 cm tall with pinnate leaves of small oblong leaflets ending in a short tendril, and tiny white to pale blue pea flowers. Each short flattened pod holds one or two lens-shaped seeds; red lentils are the orange-pink cotyledons of varieties whose brown seed coat has been removed. We extract the dried seed.

Tincture or alcohol-free drops?

Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
