Red Sage (Salvia miltiorrhiza) is dan shen, a perennial of the mint family, Lamiaceae, native to China and Japan, where it grows on sunny hillsides and stream banks and is widely cultivated in Sichuan, Shandong and Henan. It reaches 30 to 80 cm with hairy stems, pinnately compound leaves of three to seven oval, wrinkled leaflets, and whorls of blue-violet two-lipped flowers in loose spikes. The branching root is the distinctive feature, with a brick-red to purplish-red bark that gives the plant its Chinese and English names. We extract the dried root.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
