Rooibos (Aspalathus linearis) is a shrub of the legume family, Fabaceae, native only to the Cederberg mountains of South Africa's Western Cape, where it is grown on sandy, acidic soils for the red tea that bears its name. It is a broom-like bush 1 to 2 meters tall with needle-like green leaves in clusters along slender branches and small yellow pea flowers in spring. The leaves and twigs are cut, bruised, fermented in heaps and sun-dried, turning from green to the characteristic red-brown with a sweet, honey-like scent. We extract the dried leaf.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
