Safed Musli (Chlorophytum borivilianum) is a tuberous perennial of the asparagus family, Asparagaceae, native to the tropical forests of peninsular India, notably Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Rajasthan, and now cultivated as a crop. Like its houseplant relative the spider plant, it forms a rosette of long, narrow, bright green leaves spreading 20 to 40 cm, with a short spike of small white, star-shaped flowers in the monsoon. Below ground is a cluster of finger-like, fleshy white tubers from which the Hindi name, "white musli", derives. We extract the dried root.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
