San Qi (Panax notoginseng) is tienchi or notoginseng, a perennial of the ivy family, Araliaceae, native to the mountains of Yunnan and Guangxi in southwestern China, where it is grown under shade on terraced hillsides. Like its ginseng relatives it has a single stem 30 to 60 cm tall topped by a whorl of palmate leaves with five to seven toothed leaflets, a small umbel of yellow-green flowers and a cluster of bright red berries. The root is short, conical and knobby with a grey-brown skin and a hard, greyish-green interior. We extract the dried root.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
