Sanicle (Sanicula europaea) is wood sanicle, a perennial of the carrot family, Apiaceae, native to Europe, western Asia and North Africa, where it grows in the shade of beech and oak woods on calcareous soils. It forms a basal cluster of glossy, dark green, palmately lobed leaves with three to five toothed segments on long stalks, and in early summer sends up slender stems 20 to 60 cm tall topped with small, tight umbels of tiny pink-white flowers. The rounded fruits are covered in hooked bristles that catch on fur and clothing. We extract the dried herb.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
