Screw Tree (Helicteres isora) is the East Indian screw tree, a shrub or small tree of the mallow family, Malvaceae, native to India, Sri Lanka, southern China and Southeast Asia, where it grows in dry deciduous forest and scrub. It reaches 1.5 to 5 meters with rough, oval, serrated leaves that are grey-felted beneath, and showy flowers that open red and fade to blue. The distinctive fruit is a bundle of five slender carpels twisted tightly together into a spiral like a screw, greenish when young and dark brown when ripe. We extract the dried fruit.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
