Selfheal (Prunella vulgaris) is a creeping perennial of the mint family, Lamiaceae, native to Europe, Asia and North America, where it grows in lawns, meadows, woodland edges and roadsides. It forms low mats 10 to 30 cm tall with square stems and opposite oval leaves, topped by dense, cylindrical heads of purple-violet two-lipped flowers set among purplish bracts. After flowering the brown, club-shaped heads persist through summer and are easily recognized. The Chinese name xia ku cao means "the herb that withers in summer". We extract the dried herb.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
