Senega Snakeroot (Polygala senega) is a perennial of the milkwort family, Polygalaceae, native to eastern and central North America from Quebec to Georgia and the Great Plains, where it grows in rocky open woods and dry prairies. Several unbranched stems 15 to 50 cm tall rise from a woody crown, each with alternate, narrow lanceolate leaves and a dense terminal spike of small white, pea-like flowers in early summer. The pale, knotted, twisted taproot has a distinct raised keel along one side and a faint wintergreen scent. We extract the dried root.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
