Shan Zhu Yu (Cornus officinalis) is the Japanese cornel or Asiatic cornelian cherry, a deciduous small tree of the dogwood family, Cornaceae, native to China and Korea and long cultivated in Zhejiang and Henan and in Japan. It grows 4 to 10 meters with peeling grey-brown bark and opposite, oval leaves with arching veins and tufts of hair beneath. Clusters of tiny yellow flowers open on bare branches in late winter, before the leaves, and are followed in autumn by oblong, glossy red, sour fruit whose stone is removed before drying. We extract the dried fruit.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
