Skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora) is the blue or mad-dog skullcap, a slender perennial of the mint family, Lamiaceae, native to North America from Canada to Florida and California, where it grows in wet meadows, marshes and stream banks. It reaches 30 to 80 cm with square stems and opposite, oval, toothed leaves, and bears small blue to violet two-lipped flowers along one-sided racemes in the leaf axils. Each flower's calyx bears a raised ridge on top, likened to a helmet or a small cap, which gives the genus and the plant their names. We extract the dried herb.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
