Spanish Needle (Bidens pilosa) is an upright annual of the daisy family, Asteraceae, native to tropical America and now a common weed of roadsides, fields and gardens throughout the warm regions of the world, including Hawaii. It grows 30 to 150 cm tall with square, branching stems and opposite leaves divided into three to five toothed leaflets, and bears small flower heads with yellow centers and often a few short white rays. The slender black seeds, tipped with two to four barbed bristles, cling to clothing and fur like needles. We extract the dried leaf.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
