Stevia (Stevia rebaudiana) is candyleaf or sweetleaf, a tender perennial of the daisy family, Asteraceae, native to the highlands of Paraguay and Brazil along the Rio Monday and now cultivated in China, Japan, Kenya and Paraguay. It grows 30 to 80 cm tall with slender stems and small, oval, lightly toothed leaves arranged in pairs, and bears clusters of tiny white tubular flowers in late summer. The leaves taste intensely sweet, two to three hundred times sweeter than sugar by weight, from the steviol glycosides they contain. We extract the dried leaf.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
