Sweet Violet (Viola odorata) is a low perennial of the violet family, Violaceae, native to Europe, North Africa and western Asia and naturalized in parts of North America, where it grows in hedge banks, woodland edges and shaded lawns. It spreads by runners into carpets of heart-shaped, finely scalloped leaves 5 to 15 cm tall, and in early spring bears deep violet, occasionally white, five-petaled flowers on slender stalks with a sweet fragrance that briefly dulls the sense of smell. Its flowers are candied and distilled for perfume. We extract the dried leaf.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
