Tai Zi Shen (Pseudostellaria heterophylla) is the heterophylly false starwort or "prince ginseng", a small perennial of the pink family, Caryophyllaceae, native to eastern China, Korea and Japan, where it grows in moist forest understorey and is cultivated in Jiangsu, Shandong and Fujian. It rises 15 to 20 cm from a spindle-shaped tuberous root, with paired leaves that are narrow on the lower stem and broader toward the top, and solitary small white flowers with five petals. The roots are slender, pale yellow and translucent when dried. We extract the dried root.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
