Tonka (Dipteryx odorata) is the tonka bean tree, a tall evergreen tree of the legume family, Fabaceae, native to the rainforests of northern South America, including Venezuela, the Guianas and Brazil. It reaches 25 to 30 meters with smooth grey bark, pinnate leaves of leathery, oblong leaflets and clusters of small pink to purple flowers, followed by thick, egg-shaped pods each holding a single large seed. The wrinkled, black seeds, about 3 cm long, develop a strong sweet scent of vanilla, almond and hay from coumarin when dried and cured in rum. We extract the dried beans.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
