Torreya (Torreya grandis) is the Chinese nutmeg yew, an evergreen conifer of the yew family, Taxaceae, native to the mountains of eastern China, where it grows in mixed forests and is cultivated in Zhejiang for its edible seeds. It grows 15 to 25 meters with yellowish-brown bark and flat, stiff, sharp-pointed needles arranged in two rows along the twigs. The seed, known as fei zi, is oval, about 2 to 3 cm long, enclosed in a fleshy green aril that turns purple-brown when ripe, with a thin woody shell around an oily kernel. We extract the dried nut.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
