Violet (Viola yedoensis) is the Chinese violet, zi hua di ding, a small stemless perennial of the violet family, Violaceae, native to China, Korea, Japan and Taiwan, where it grows in lawns, roadsides, field margins and open woodland. It forms a low rosette 5 to 15 cm tall of narrow, oblong to triangular leaves with long stalks and winged margins, and in early spring bears deep purple-violet flowers with a darker-veined lower petal and a short spur, each on its own stalk. Later in the season it sets seed from small closed flowers. We extract the dried herb.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
