About Smallanthus sonchifolius

Yacon (Smallanthus sonchifolius) is a tuberous perennial of the daisy family, Asteraceae, native to the Andes of Peru, Bolivia and Ecuador, where it has been grown as a root crop since pre-Columbian times, and now cultivated in New Zealand, Japan and the United States. It grows 1.5 to 2.5 meters tall with large, triangular, hairy, winged-stalked leaves and small yellow to orange sunflower-like flower heads in late autumn. Below ground it forms a cluster of large, spindle-shaped tubers with brown skin and crisp, juicy, sweet flesh that tastes like a cross between apple and watermelon. We extract the dried root.

Tincture or alcohol-free drops?

Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
