Yuan Zhi (Polygala tenuifolia) is the thin-leaved milkwort, a slender perennial of the milkwort family, Polygalaceae, native to northern China, Mongolia, Korea and Siberia, where it grows on dry grassy slopes, rocky hillsides and forest edges. Several wiry stems 15 to 50 cm tall rise from a woody crown, with narrow, almost needle-like alternate leaves and loose racemes of small blue-purple flowers whose fringed lower petal resembles a tiny keel. The slender, cylindrical, grey-yellow root has a bark that pulls free of the woody core when dried. We extract the dried root.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
