Zhi Shi (Citrus x aurantium) is the bitter or Seville orange, a small evergreen tree of the citrus family, Rutaceae, an ancient hybrid of pomelo and mandarin from Southeast Asia and long cultivated in China and the Mediterranean. It grows 5 to 10 meters with thorny branches, glossy oval leaves with a winged stalk and intensely fragrant white flowers. The fruit is round, thick-skinned and bumpy, with sour, bitter pulp; zhi shi is the young, immature fruit that drops in early summer, about 1 to 2 cm across, cut in half and dried. We extract the dried fruit.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
