About Gardenia jasminoides

Zhi Zi (Gardenia jasminoides) is the cape jasmine or common gardenia, an evergreen shrub of the coffee family, Rubiaceae, native to southern China, Taiwan, Japan and Indochina and planted as an ornamental throughout the warm temperate world, including Hawaii. It forms a dense bush 1 to 3 meters tall with glossy, dark green, leathery, oval leaves and large, waxy, intensely fragrant white flowers in summer that age to cream. The ripe fruit is an oval, ribbed, orange-red berry 2 to 4 cm long with a persistent calyx, and its pulp yields a yellow food dye. We extract the dried fruit.

Tincture or alcohol-free drops?

Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
