About Aster tataricus

Zi Wan (Aster tataricus) is the Tatarian aster, a tall perennial of the daisy family, Asteraceae, native to Siberia, Mongolia, northern China, Korea and Japan, where it grows in damp meadows, riverbanks and open woodland. It forms a basal clump of large, rough, spoon-shaped leaves up to 30 cm long and sends up stout stems 1 to 2 meters tall topped in autumn by loose clusters of lavender-blue daisy-like flower heads with yellow centers. Below ground, many slender, purplish-brown fibrous roots hang from a short rhizome. We extract the dried root.

Tincture or alcohol-free drops?

Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
