Frequently Asked Questions about Luo Han Guo Extract
What is Luo Han Guo / Monk Fruit (Siraitia grosvenorii) fruit extract?
Luo Han Guo is a liquid extract of the dried fruit of Siraitia grosvenorii, a vine in the gourd family (Cucurbitaceae) known in English as monk fruit or Buddha fruit. You may see it labeled with the older botanical name Momordica grosvenori; the accepted name today is Siraitia grosvenorii. Monk fruit is famous as the source of mogrosides, the natural compounds that give the fruit its intense sweetness (and the basis of monk-fruit sweeteners). This tincture is extracted with organic alcohol at 48% by volume. It is a whole-fruit liquid extract carrying the fruit's natural constituents, including mogrosides, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product, and it is meant to be taken internally by the drop. The raw material is responsibly sourced and each batch is gluten free.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Siraitia grosvenorii fruit; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol at 48% by volume with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a super-concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal clear water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The botanical inside is identical.
Is monk fruit the same as bitter melon, and is this a sweetener?
No, they are different plants. Monk fruit (Luo Han Guo) is Siraitia grosvenorii, a sweet Cucurbitaceae fruit; bitter melon is Momordica charantia, a bitter Cucurbitaceae fruit that we sell separately. The confusion comes from an older name, "Momordica grosvenori," which once placed monk fruit in the bitter-melon genus; the accepted name is now Siraitia grosvenorii, and we label it that way. On the sweetener question: monk fruit is indeed the plant behind natural monk-fruit sweeteners, whose sweetness comes from mogrosides, and we note that as a simple fact of what the plant is. This product itself is an herbal liquid extract taken by the drop, not a tabletop sweetener product, and we do not make any dietary, blood-sugar or weight claims for it.
How do I use Luo Han Guo / monk-fruit liquid extract?
Shake well before use. The suggested serving for adults is 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water or juice, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Monk fruit has a naturally sweet, slightly fruity character. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to a little water softens the taste. Do not exceed the suggested serving. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
Is Luo Han Guo / Monk Fruit extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Monk fruit (Siraitia grosvenorii) is one of the best-established food botanicals: the US FDA has issued multiple GRAS (generally recognized as safe) notices for monk fruit fruit extracts as a non-nutritive sweetener, and no evidence suggests a hazard to consumers under normal use. It is considered very safe and well tolerated. As a general precaution with any concentrated herbal extract, consult a healthcare practitioner before use during pregnancy or nursing, and if you take any medication or have a medical condition. Keep out of reach of children. This tincture contains 48% alcohol by volume and should be stored in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
