Quina, better known as cinchona, is an evergreen tree of the madder family (Rubiaceae), botanically Cinchona officinalis, native to the Andes of South America. The part used here is the bark. It is one of the most historically important plants in the world, known by names such as Peruvian bark, Jesuit's bark, and the "fever tree," and it is the natural source from which the compound quinine was first isolated - a point of botanical history rather than a claim about our product. Our extract is made from the dried bark and offered in two forms - a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite - each from ethically sourced raw material. This is a whole-bark liquid extract that carries the plant's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Cinchona officinalis bark; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, with vegetable glycerin and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. Both deliver the bark's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.
Is this the same as quinine or tonic water?
No, and the difference matters. Our product is a whole-bark liquid extract of Cinchona officinalis. It is not isolated quinine, which is a purified, regulated pharmaceutical compound, and it is not tonic water, which is a flavored soft drink that contains only a small amount of quinine for taste. Cinchona bark is simply the natural plant material from which quinine was historically obtained. Our species is Cinchona officinalis, one of several cinchona species. We label our product clearly by botanical name (Cinchona officinalis) and plant part (bark) so there is no confusion with the isolated drug, with tonic water, or with other cinchona species.
How do I use Quina liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Because cinchona bark is potent, use it only in small amounts and ideally under the guidance of a qualified practitioner. Take the amount directed on the label in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, and do not exceed the suggested serving. Drink the entire contents.
Is Quina extract right for everyone? Important safety information.
Quina is not right for everyone, and it calls for real caution. Cinchona bark naturally contains quinine and related alkaloids, which in more than small amounts can cause a set of effects known as cinchonism - such as ringing in the ears, headache, nausea, and changes in vision - and can affect heart rhythm and the blood. For these reasons, use it only in small amounts, do not exceed the suggested serving, and it is best used under the guidance of a qualified practitioner. Do not use it during pregnancy. If you take anticoagulants (blood thinners), heart medication, or any other medicines, or if you have a medical condition, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Not for children.
