Catnip (Nepeta Cataria) is an aromatic perennial plant of the mint family (Lamiaceae). It is best known for its playful effect on many cats, which comes from a natural compound called nepetalactone, and the plant has also long been used as a botanical for people. The parts used here are the leaf and flower. Other names for it include catmint and catswort. The leaves and flowers naturally contain essential oils and flavonoids.

  •

WHOLE-HERB LIQUID EXTRACT: Made from the dried leaf and flower of Nepeta cataria, carrying the plant's natural spectrum of constituents rather than an isolated or standardized single compound.

  •

TRADITIONAL ALCOHOL EXTRACTION: A classic alcohol-based tincture, made with organic alcohol, vegetable glycerin, and water, for a concentrated extract with a long shelf life.

  •

A BOTANICAL FOR PEOPLE: This is a supplement for adults. We also offer a separate catnip product intended for cats - be sure to choose the one you want.

  •

TRUE CATNIP: Made from Nepeta cataria (true catnip), distinct from the ornamental garden catmint (such as Nepeta x faassenii) grown for landscaping.

  •

CLEARLY LABELED: Labeled by botanical name and plant part, so there is no confusion with garden catmint, dried loose catnip, or catnip tea.

Nepeta cataria - True Catnip, Leaf and Flower

Catnip (Nepeta cataria) is a familiar member of the mint family, easily recognized by its soft, gray-green leaves and small flower spikes. Famous for the response it draws from many cats, it has also long been a garden and household herb. Our Catnip tincture captures the dried leaf and flower in a concentrated, alcohol-based liquid extract.

About our Catnip Tincture:

We start with quality catnip leaf and flower and use a classic, conventional alcohol extraction with organic alcohol, vegetable glycerin, and water. It is a whole-herb extract - not an isolate - carrying the plant's natural profile. This is the true catnip, Nepeta cataria, and it is a botanical supplement for people.

Suggested use: Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to four times a day, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents.*

Frequently Asked Questions about Catnip Extract
What is Catnip (Nepeta cataria) leaf and flower extract?
Catnip is an aromatic perennial plant of the mint family (Lamiaceae), botanically Nepeta cataria. It is best known for its playful effect on many cats, which comes from a natural compound called nepetalactone, but the plant has also long been used as a botanical for people. The parts used here are the leaf and flower. Other names for it include catmint and catswort. Our extract is offered in two forms - a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite - each from ethically sourced raw material. The leaves and flowers naturally contain essential oils and flavonoids. This is a whole-herb liquid extract that carries the plant's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Nepeta cataria leaf and flower; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, with vegetable glycerin and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. Both deliver the herb's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.
Is this for people or cats, and is it the same as garden catmint?
Two useful clarifications. First, people versus cats: this product is a botanical supplement for adults, made from Nepeta cataria leaf and flower. We also offer a separate catnip product intended for cats, so be sure to choose the one you want. Second, catmint: true catnip is Nepeta cataria, our species; the ornamental "catmint" grown in gardens for its blue-purple flowers is usually a different Nepeta, such as Nepeta x faassenii or Nepeta mussinii. They are related but not the same, and the garden types are grown for landscaping. Our product is specifically the true catnip, Nepeta cataria (leaf and flower), and it is also different from the dried loose catnip and catnip tea sold elsewhere. We label our product clearly by botanical name and plant part so there is no confusion.
How do I use Catnip liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents.
Is Catnip extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Catnip is not right for everyone. It is traditionally avoided during pregnancy, so do not use it if you are pregnant. It may cause drowsiness in some people, so do not drive or operate machinery if it affects you this way. If you are nursing, take any medication, or have a medical condition, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Not for children. Keep out of reach of children, and do not exceed the suggested serving. Store this tincture in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.
