Important safety information - please read before use

Chaksu (Cassia / Senna absus) seed calls for several important cautions. Please read them carefully.

Consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use if you are breastfeeding, and use caution if you are trying to conceive.

  • Blood sugar: it may lower blood sugar - use caution if you have diabetes or take blood-sugar-lowering medication.
  • Digestive: it contains mild natural laxative compounds and can cause cramps or loose stools; do not use it if you have an obstructive bowel condition, and do not combine it with other laxatives or diuretics.
  • Dose: keep to short-term use and do not exceed the suggested serving.
  • Contains alcohol. Do not give it to infants or young children. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions about Chaksu Extract
What is Chaksu (Cassia absus / Senna absus) seed extract?
Chaksu is a liquid extract of the dried seed of Cassia absus - whose accepted botanical name today is Senna absus (it has also been placed in the genus Chamaecrista) - a legume of the Fabaceae family, also called pig's senna or bitter senna. This tincture is extracted with organic alcohol. Two things matter most for safety: the seed has shown reproductive toxicity in animal studies and stimulates the uterus, so it must NOT be used in pregnancy; and it contains alkaloids (chaksine, isochaksine) that can lower blood pressure and blood sugar, plus mild natural laxative compounds. It is a different plant from the other "cassia/senna" herbs we carry. Please read the safety notes below.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Cassia/Senna absus seed; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The seed inside is identical, and the same safety notes apply to both.
Is Chaksu the same as other cassia or senna herbs?
No - the cassia/senna group has many members that are easy to confuse, and we label each by species. Chaksu is Cassia absus (accepted name Senna absus). It is not Avaram (Senna auriculata), not sicklepod or Jue Ming Zi (Senna/Cassia obtusifolia), and not laxative senna (Senna alexandrina), although as a relative it does contain some of the same mild laxative anthraquinones. And, confusingly, "cassia" can also mean cassia cinnamon (Cinnamomum cassia), a completely different plant - a cinnamon bark - which is unrelated. Chaksu also carries the older genus name Cassia and the alternative Chamaecrista absus; they all refer to the same seed. We label ours clearly so it is not mixed up with the others.
How do I use Chaksu liquid extract?
Shake well first. A typical amount is 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to a few times a day, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Do not exceed the suggested serving, and keep to short-term use. Because the seed has mild laxative activity, cut back if you notice loose stools. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to water softens the taste. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light, and shake before each use.
Is Chaksu right for everyone? Safety information.
Please read this carefully. Pregnancy and fertility: do NOT use Chaksu during pregnancy - the seed has shown reproductive toxicity in animal studies (reduced fertility and lost pregnancies) and stimulates the uterus; consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use if you are breastfeeding, and use caution if you are trying to conceive. Blood pressure: its alkaloids may lower blood pressure, so use caution if you have low blood pressure or take blood-pressure medication. Blood sugar: it may lower blood sugar, so use caution if you have diabetes or take blood-sugar-lowering medication. Digestive: it contains mild natural laxative compounds and can cause cramps or loose stools; do not use it if you have an obstructive bowel condition, and do not combine it with other laxatives or diuretics. Keep to short-term use and do not exceed the suggested serving. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not give it to infants or young children. Do not use it to self-treat eye, blood-pressure or blood-sugar problems - see a qualified doctor instead. This tincture contains alcohol and should be stored in a cool, dark place. Keep out of reach of children. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS
Our Chaksu (Cassia Absus) Seed is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.
METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION
Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.
COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING
Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
  • FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation
  • Microbiological testing (total plate count, E. coli, coliforms)
  • Yeast and mold screening
  • Alcohol content verification
  • Viscosity measurement
  • Refractometric analysis
