Frequently Asked Questions about Chen Xiang Extract
What is Chen Xiang / agarwood (Aquilaria sinensis) wood extract?
Chen Xiang is the Chinese name for agarwood - the fragrant, resin-impregnated wood of Aquilaria sinensis, a tree of the Thymelaeaceae family; in pharmacy it is Lignum Aquilariae Resinatum, and it is also called aloeswood. This tincture is an alcohol extract of the dried resinous wood, taken by the drop. Two notes matter: agarwood-producing trees are protected under CITES (an international wildlife-trade agreement), so responsible, documented sourcing is important; and while agarwood is considered non-toxic, it is not to be used during pregnancy. Please see the safety notes below.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Aquilaria sinensis resinous wood; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The wood inside is identical, and the same safety notes apply to both.
Is Chen Xiang the same as Sandalwood or Tan Xiang? And is it CITES-protected?
Two things. First, Chen Xiang (agarwood, Aquilaria sinensis) is not the same as Sandalwood or Tan Xiang, which are both Santalum album - a different fragrant wood we list separately. Second, yes: Aquilaria trees that produce agarwood are listed under CITES (Appendix II) because wild trees have been over-harvested, so agarwood should come from responsibly managed, documented sources. Agarwood is also one of the most counterfeited natural materials, which is another reason clear botanical labeling matters. We label ours as Aquilaria sinensis.
How do I use Chen Xiang / agarwood liquid extract?
Shake well first. A typical amount is 20 to 30 drops in 2 oz of water, up to three times a day, or as directed by your practitioner. Do NOT use it during pregnancy. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to water softens the taste, and the aroma is naturally warm and woody. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light, and shake before each use.
Is Chen Xiang right for everyone? Safety information.
Please read this carefully. Agarwood (Chen Xiang) is regarded as non-toxic in classical sources and the Chinese Pharmacopoeia, and it has passed basic oral and skin-sensitization safety testing. Pregnancy and nursing: safety data in pregnancy are limited, so this product is not to be used during pregnancy, and you should consult your practitioner before use while breastfeeding. Keep to the suggested serving and short-term use. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Do not give it to infants or children. Sourcing note: agarwood trees are protected under CITES; we aim to source responsibly and encourage buyers to favor documented, sustainable agarwood. This tincture contains alcohol and should be stored in a cool, dark place. Keep out of reach of children. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS
Our Chen Xiang (Aquilaria Sinensis) Wood is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.
METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION
Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.
COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING
Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
  • FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation
