Frequently Asked Questions about Codonopsis Extract
What is Codonopsis (Codonopsis pilosula) root extract?
Codonopsis is a twining perennial plant of the bellflower family (Campanulaceae), botanically Codonopsis pilosula. In traditional Chinese herbalism it is known as Dang Shen. The part used here is the root. Codonopsis is often nicknamed "poor man's ginseng," because it has traditionally been used as a gentler and more affordable alternative to ginseng - but it is important to know that it is a different plant and is not true ginseng. Our extract is offered in two forms - a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite - each from ethically sourced raw material. This is a whole-root liquid extract that carries the root's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Codonopsis pilosula root; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, with vegetable glycerin and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. Both deliver the root's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.
Is codonopsis the same as ginseng?
No - and this is the most common point of confusion. Codonopsis is nicknamed "poor man's ginseng," but it is not true ginseng. True ginseng is Panax ginseng, a member of the ivy family (Araliaceae), while codonopsis (Dang Shen) is Codonopsis pilosula, a member of the bellflower family (Campanulaceae) - they are unrelated plants in different botanical families. Codonopsis earned its nickname because in traditional practice it was used as a milder, less expensive substitute for ginseng, but it is a distinct herb. There are also different species of codonopsis: ours is Codonopsis pilosula (Dang Shen), which is different from Codonopsis lanceolata (known as deodeok). We label our product clearly by botanical name (Codonopsis pilosula) and plant part (root) so there is no confusion with true ginseng or other codonopsis species.
How do I use Codonopsis liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. See the safety note below. Drink the entire contents.
Is Codonopsis extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Codonopsis is considered a gentle, mild herb and is generally well tolerated. Still, a few notes apply. Do not exceed the suggested serving. Codonopsis may affect blood sugar, so use caution and monitor your levels if you have diabetes or take blood-sugar medication. If you are pregnant or nursing, take any medication, or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children, and do not exceed the suggested serving. Store this tincture in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS

Our Codonopsis (Codonopsis Pilosula) Root is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.

METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION

Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.

COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING

Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
  • FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation
  • Microbiological testing (total plate count, E. coli, coliforms)
  • Yeast and mold screening
  • Alcohol content verification
  • Viscosity measurement
  • Refractometric analysis
