Frequently Asked Questions about Colombo Extract
What is Colombo / Calumba (Jateorhiza palmata) root extract?
Colombo (more often called calumba) is a liquid extract of the dried root of Jateorhiza palmata, a climbing plant of the Menispermaceae family; the root is known in pharmacy as Radix Calumbae. You may also see the older botanical name Cocculus palmatus. This tincture is extracted with organic alcohol. Calumba is a classic bitter root and contains bitter alkaloids (protoberberines such as palmatine) and bitter lactones. One safety point matters: do not exceed the suggested serving, because in large amounts the alkaloids can have stronger effects, and it is not for use in pregnancy. Note it is NOT the toxic "Cocculus indicus" (fishberry, Anamirta cocculus), a different and poisonous plant. Please read the safety notes below.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Jateorhiza palmata root; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method - a traditional way to prepare a bitter root - that yields a concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The root inside is identical, and the same safety notes apply to both.
Is Colombo the same as "Cocculus indicus" or other "palmata" plants?
No - and one of these matters for safety. Our Colombo is Jateorhiza palmata (older synonym Cocculus palmatus), a bitter tonic root. It is NOT "Cocculus indicus" or fishberry, which is Anamirta cocculus, a genuinely poisonous plant (source of picrotoxin) - the two only share the old genus word "Cocculus." It is also unrelated to other plants whose species name is "palmatum/palmata," such as Chinese rhubarb (Rheum palmatum, our Da Huang / Turkey Rhubarb) and the seaweed dulse (Palmaria palmata). We label ours clearly as Jateorhiza palmata so it is not confused with any of these.
How do I use Colombo liquid extract?
Shake well first. A typical amount is 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml) in 2 oz of water or juice, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Do NOT exceed the suggested serving, because the root contains bitter alkaloids, and keep to short-term use. As a bitter it is quite bitter in taste. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to water softens the taste. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light, and shake before each use.
Is Colombo right for everyone? Safety information.
Please read this carefully. Alkaloids: calumba root contains bitter protoberberine alkaloids (such as palmatine and jatrorrhizine); at ordinary bitter doses it is used traditionally, but do NOT exceed the suggested serving, because in large amounts these alkaloids can have stronger, sedative-like effects and may cause nausea or vomiting. Medications: because it contains berberine-type alkaloids, use caution and consult your practitioner if you take any medication, as interactions are possible. Pregnancy and nursing: do NOT use it during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Keep to short-term use. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not give it to infants or young children. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. This tincture contains alcohol and should be stored in a cool, dark place. Keep out of reach of children. ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS
Our Colombo (Cocculus palmatus) Root is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.
METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION
Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.
COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING
Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
  • FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation
