Devil's Claw (Harpagophytum Procumbens) is a perennial plant with hollow, highly branched stems that can reach up to 100 cm in length, spreading over the ground. Large, tuberous forms of thickening are formed on the roots of the plant. All parts of the plant are covered with sticky pubescence. By the beginning of the rainy season, overhead shoots grow up to 1 m long, spreading over the ground. Devil's Claw blooms with single bright red, purple flowers that form in the axils of the leaves. The fruit of Devil's Claw is a small box with stiff, long, branched outgrowths that have hooks bent back, which gave name of the plant. *

Frequently Asked Questions about Devil's Claw Extract
What is Devil's Claw (Harpagophytum procumbens) extract?
Devil's Claw is a liquid extract of the dried secondary root tuber of Harpagophytum procumbens, the African grapple plant native to the Kalahari of southern Africa, named for the claw-like hooks on its fruit. It is offered here as a traditional alcohol tincture. It is a botanical extract and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease; please read the safety note below, as devil's claw has several important cautions.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Harpagophytum procumbens root tuber; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water instead, a good choice for those avoiding alcohol. Choose whichever suits you. The material inside is identical, and the same notes apply to both.
How is this different from your other devil's claw, Devil's Club, and Cat's Claw?
We carry two species of devil's claw. This page is Harpagophytum procumbens, the pharmacopoeial devil's claw; we also carry Harpagophytum zeyheri, a related African species often used similarly. They are different species, so if the exact one matters to you, check the botanical name. Devil's Claw should not be confused with Devil's Club (Oplopanax horridus), an unrelated North American plant, or with Cat's Claw (Uncaria tomentosa), an unrelated South American vine - despite the similar names, these are entirely different plants. This page is Harpagophytum procumbens root tuber.
How is Devil's Claw extract used?
Shake well before use. Use the number of drops shown on the label, in a little water, tea, or juice, up to the suggested frequency. Because this is an alcohol tincture, it may be diluted in water. Store in a cool, dry place, and keep out of reach of children.
Is Devil's Claw (Harpagophytum procumbens) safe? Safety information.

Diabetes: it may lower blood sugar, so monitor closely if you take diabetes medication. Heart: it may affect heart rate or rhythm, so use caution if you have a heart condition. Digestive: the most common side effect is mild stomach upset. Pregnancy and nursing: avoid use during pregnancy and while breastfeeding. If you have a medical condition or take medication, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not give it to infants or children without medical advice.
