Dong Chong Xia Cao (Cordyceps Sinensis) consists of two parts: sclerotia and stroma. The fungus propagates by spores, which, like a homing weapon, “shoot” only when a caterpillar of a butterfly creeps past. Adhered to the insect, the spores dissolve the skin and penetrate the body, where they remain at rest until the caterpillar begins to bury itself in the ground for pupation on the eve of winter. The stroma of Cordycep sSinensis is dark brown or black, less often yellow. On a slender, bare, longitudinally furrowed or ribbed leg of the mushroom, a club-shaped or spindle-shaped granular head is clearly visible.*

Frequently Asked Questions about Dong Chong Xia Cao Extract
What is Dong Chong Xia Cao / Cordyceps (Cordyceps sinensis) extract?
Dong Chong Xia Cao is the Chinese name for Cordyceps sinensis (accepted botanical name Ophiocordyceps sinensis), the famous "caterpillar fungus" of the Tibetan Plateau - an entomopathogenic fungus that grows from the body of a moth larva; in English it is known simply as Cordyceps. This is a liquid extract of the dried fungus, offered here as a traditional alcohol tincture. It is a botanical extract and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease; please read the safety note below.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Cordyceps sinensis fungus; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water instead, a good choice for those avoiding alcohol. Choose whichever suits you. The fungus inside is identical, and the same notes apply to both.
How is this different from Cordyceps militaris, and is it wild or cultivated?
Dong Chong Xia Cao is Cordyceps sinensis (accepted name Ophiocordyceps sinensis), the wild Tibetan caterpillar fungus; we also list it simply as "Cordyceps." Cordyceps militaris is a different species - the cultivated orange cordyceps - which we carry separately; it is not the same organism. Wild Cordyceps sinensis is a protected species listed under CITES (Appendix II) and is classified as vulnerable, and wild material can accumulate arsenic, so responsibly cultivated material is preferred. If sourcing matters to you, check whether a cordyceps product is wild or cultivated, and whether it is C. sinensis or C. militaris. This page is Cordyceps sinensis.
How is Dong Chong Xia Cao / Cordyceps extract used?
Shake well before use. Use the number of drops shown on the label, in a little water or juice, up to the suggested frequency. Because this is an alcohol tincture, it may be diluted in water. Store in a cool, dry place, and keep out of reach of children.
Is Cordyceps (Cordyceps sinensis) safe? Safety information.
Cordyceps is generally well tolerated; the most common side effects are mild digestive ones such as upset stomach, nausea, or diarrhea. Sourcing: wild caterpillar fungus can accumulate arsenic with long-term use, so responsibly cultivated material is preferred; wild Cordyceps sinensis is also a protected, CITES-listed species. Medication: it may affect blood clotting, so if you take blood thinners or other medication, consult your practitioner. Pregnancy and nursing: safety data are limited, so avoid use during pregnancy and while breastfeeding. If you have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not give it to infants or children without medical advice. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. This tincture contains alcohol. Keep out of reach of children. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
